One practical tip: always start with the shortest words. Three and four-letter answers have fewer crossing constraints, which means they narrow down the possibilities for the longer words much faster.

Count letter frequency first. Before you try any word, scan the pool for rare letters: Q, X, Z, J. Any word using those letters is almost certainly required, and placing it early gives you confirmed crossings to build around.

Use the grid shape. Long horizontal slots and short vertical slots usually mean the horizontal words anchor the puzzle. Fill all the horizontals first and the verticals often solve themselves.

Do not ignore partial fills. If you have placed three letters of a six-letter word and the remaining squares are crossed by words you cannot solve yet, leave it and return. The crossing letters will reveal themselves as you fill neighbouring slots.
